| Wolfie is a handsome tuxedo black. He came back to us when his owners found they no longer had time for the dogs. He is currently doing great in a foster home with other greyhounds, a Jack Russell Terrier and 3 cats. In February '08, Wolfie was diagnosed with lymphoma. See below for progress reports (most recent updates listed first). Update, May 28: Wolfie experienced some problems during the last two weeks of the first treatment protocol - his veins appeared to be weakening allowing some of the chemo drug to escape which in turn caused painful sores on his front legs. They are finally starting to heal and don't seem to be bothering him anymore. Unfortunately, the first treatment plan did not bring Wolfie into remission. OSU offered another option and we began the new course of treatment on May 8th. We are very happy to report that Wolfie is now in remission!!! All of his lymph nodes are back to normal and he continues to eat well, is always in good spirits and is enjoying the sunshine. He has a few more follow-up treatments to finish out this protocol and hopefully set him up to enjoy many months, or more, of remission. Thank you again to the team at OSU for their guidance and support as we work through this with Wolfie and to Dr Nikki Curtis at Audubon Animal Hospital for being there to care for Wolfie and provide his treatments here at home. Update, April 8: Wolfie has a very good attitude, is eating well, has gained some weight back and is enjoying short walks, however, his lymph nodes are swelling again. He is entering the 5th week of treatment and the dosage will be adjusted beginning this week to see if we will be successful at getting him into remission. We will continue to do the best we can for Wolfie for as long as we can. We are staying positive and hoping for remission to give Wolfie as much time as possible. We will continue to post updates on his progress. Medical note: In February '08, Wolfie was diagnosed with lymphoma. He is currently undergoing chemo treatments and we owe a huge thank you to Dr. Liliana Marin, DVM , the Greyhound Health and Wellness Program Coordinator at the Ohio State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. She is overseeing Wolfie's treatment and OSU has provided some of the medication for his chemotherapy. (http://www.vet.osu.edu/1872.htm ) Our veterinarian, Dr. Nikki Curtis of Audubon Animal Hospital (Owensboro, KY), is helping us greatly by managing Wolfie's treatment here at home. Wolfie is only 7 1/2 years old and with this type of diagnosis, we realize that his life expectancy may only be a matter of months. Because of this, GPA Tri-State has put a new policy in place that allows us to change a foster dog over to "permanent foster" status. This means that Wolfie is no longer available for adoption. He will have a loving home with one of our volunteers who will take care of him under the guidance of GPA Tri-State and our veterinarians while our organization continues to provide for his medical needs. |
